Possessor
POSSESSOR follows an agent who works for a secretive organization that uses brain-implant technology to inhabit other people's bodies - ultimately driving them to commit assassinations for high-paying clients.
The son of the great David Cronenberg, Brandon, helmed this film. And in my opinion, he took his father’s legacy and managed to add his own input to it and make something new out of it.
This is such a great film. Unapologetically brutal, bleak, and violent. But also beautiful to look at. Some really creative filmmaking and awesome cinematography. The film DP, Karim Hussain, did a great job here. I really enjoyed the concept of possessing people to get them to assassinate. It was really well explored. I also liked how the film displays the invasion of privacy that technology brings.
I'll definitely be on the look for the next Brandon Cronenberg film.
The Vast Of Night
One night in New Mexico, in the late 1950s, a switchboard operator and radio DJ discover a strange audio frequency that could change the future forever.
This is such a pleasant and clever indie sci-fi film. A stunning debut from director Andrew Patterson. While it isn't exactly ground-breaking (it borrows heavily from THE TWILIGHT ZONE) I really liked the sense of mystery the movie presents.
The film is very well written and acted and I loved some of the long takes the director used. They are just straight-up impressive. They also did a great job with the 1950's speech patterns and jargon in the opening scene and throughout the movie.
THE VAST OF NIGHT is not perfect but is a great example of what you can accomplish with a small budget. I think it will go down as a cult classic.
The Kid Detective
A once-celebrated kid detective, now 31, continues to solve the same trivial mysteries between hangovers and bouts of self-pity. Until a naive client brings him his first 'adult' case, to find out who brutally murdered her boyfriend.
The first time I saw the trailer of this movie I thought “this looks so stupid”. But when it came out on VOD I decided to give it a chance. I didn't expect much of it but I was pleasantly surprised.
THE KID DETECTIVE is a great dark and dry dramedy. The movie was written and directed by Evan Morgan. And it has an amazing combination of a tight script and masterful direction. The dark humor and mystery are very well-made and there were parts that I literally laughed out loud.
Adam Brody was so great in this. I’m glad to see him having an opportunity to shine again. I hope to see him getting more work in the future. Sophie Nelisse was also great and perfectly cast on her role.
THE KID DETECTIVE is a hidden gem and It is a shame that more people haven’t watch it.
