Hello everyone. I hope you are all well. In this week’s newsletter, I will share thoughts on 3 shows that I binge-watched this week. I honestly didn’t find any new films that were worth recommending so I decided to spend all my time watching these series. No regrets.
I also watched the FRIENDS reunion special last weekend and I have to say, I thought it was very depressing. I was happy to see them together again but the whole thing just felt really, really fake. And what was the deal with the celebs which had absolutely no relation or connection with the show? Where was Paul Rudd? At least Matt le blanc was funny.
Anyway, as always you’ll also find a playlist of 5 songs I enjoyed this week. Enjoy your weekend!
SWEET TOOTH
SWEET TOOTH is an adaptation of Jeff Lemire's Vertigo Comics series of the same name. starring Christian Convery, Nonso Anozie, Adeel Akhtar, Will Forte, and Dania Ramirez, the show is set ten years after an occurrence known as "the great crumble" that resulted in all newborns being born as human-animal hybrids. Humanity is uncertain as to whether these hybrids are the consequence or the source of a terrible virus that spread over the world. And because of that people fear or hunt them.
The show tells the story of Gus, a deer-boy hybrid, who is forced to leave the protection of his home and team up with an odd, and an unwilling partner named Jepperd, a former pro football player attempting to escape his dark past. While striving to connect with his mother, they build a relationship and Gus learns more about the world than he ever imagined.
I really liked how the tone of the show is well set In the pilot. After the first episode, the series' world begins to unfold. You'll know before the conclusion of it if this is an adventure you're up for or not. While the main plot adds stakes and moral difficulties, the subplot adds its own brand of bravery. And it is very interesting to see these different storylines even though is clear that the two narratives will inevitably collide.
And despite the series' grim theme, it is emotional and entertaining, and its protagonist is as lovely as one can be. It's also nice to see a YA show that doesn't make the viewers uncomfortable while watching. It SWEET TOOTH is not only clearly superior above some recent YA shows, but it also remains true to its mission statement: to produce a coming-of-age fairy tale that anyone can enjoy.
MARE EASTTOWN
Kate Winslet leads the cast of this new HBO drama series MARE EASTTOWN, which revolves around a troubled police detective named Mare. Based on the novel by Brad Ingelsby, the series revolves around a town where the residents are still trying to figure out what happened to their loved ones that disappeared or died. Craig Zobel directs this as a solid follow-up to his acclaimed debut film, THE HUNT. The Series also. features an impressive ensemble cast that includes Guy Pearce, Cailee Spaeny, Julianne Nicholson, and the great Jean Smart.
The characters of the show are so real, multi-faceted, and relatable. Kate Winslet is a stunning actress who shows a wide variety of emotional and physical pain as she plays Mare. She is constantly dealing with depression and sorrow. She also deals with various disturbances, such as drug addicts and perverts.
Crime dramas can be super cliche but the unwinding of this one made it an interesting watch. The twists and turns the show had were unbelievable and just when you would think you knew what was happening things would change and you would realize you were wrong. Each episode also ended with its own convenient red herring, which managed to keep viewers glued to their screens.
My biggest fear about this show was that the finale would be as bad as the first season of TRUE DETECTIVES finale was. But luckily MARE EASTTOWN had a very interesting conclusion that I did not see coming at all.
SOLOS
SOLOS is a comprehensive mini-series telling a single, self-contained story with a specific ending. I hadn't heard anything about it until I received a screener link and decided to check It out based on the stellar cast alone. And what a beautiful surprise it was. SOLOS is an emotional roller coaster. Very interesting and unpredictable.
The writing is really good, and the acting is even better. Both of those skills come together to create something that is a series of monologues that the A-list actors deliver with perfection. The short stories are creative, intriguing, and amazingly thought-provoking. All of them are connected through a central theme. They all take place in a single setting, with usually a single character with a robot or AI interacting with them. I enjoyed all the episodes but the ones with Helen Mirren and Constance Wu really blew me away.
Forget Rotten Tomatoes ratings and people comparing the show to Netflix’s BLACK MIRROR. In my opinion, SOLOS is a great series and you should give it a chance.
