MYTHIC QUEST season 2 | THE SONS OF SAM: A DESCENT INTO DARKNESS
Pop Culture Weekly Round-Up 07/05/2021
Hi everyone. I hope you're all well. Spring is here and I’m trying to enjoy every minute of it. After all, the COVID winter was pure hell. Anyway, this week none of the films being released caught my eye. So I’m giving my thoughts on two shows that are available to watch on streaming services. MYTHIC QUEST is super fun and if you are an IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA fan this show must be for you. It was created by Charlie Day and Rob McElhenney. They also created IASIP and play charlie and Mac on the show. The other series is a crime doc that was just released on Netflix called THE SONS OF SAM: A DESCENT INTO DARKNESS and it has a lot of twists and turns. I’m also sharing some songs that I was listening to during this last week. You can check them out on the playlists I made on Spotify and YouTube.
MYTHIC QUEST season 2
The second season of this hilarious show about a video game studio that produces a popular video game called Mythic Quest is here. In the first season of the series, the studio, which is run by the game-creator Ian Grimm (Rob McElhenney), was about to release a major expansion to the game titled Raven's Banquet. And it was an awesome ride! The show creators and writers developed an amazing show with a great ensemble of the cast that has been well-received by audiences all over the world. Can they repeat in the second season?
Although the first season took some time to settle in, the second hit the ground running. I only had the chance to watch the 2 episodes that dropped today but the show didn’t waste any time. It seems like the Mythic Quest team will spend most of this season working on the game's next expansion as well as their own problems within the company and in the gaming industry.
One of the best surprises from season one was the actress Charlotte Nicdao who plays lead engineer Poppy. She fits perfectly alongside Rob McElhenney. The Chemistry between them is so good. Since she was promoted to co-creative director at the end of season 1, I think she will provide an excellent counterbalance to the colossal ego of McElhenney’s character.
Hopefully, this new season will also spend a bit more time on the characters played by F. Murray Abraham, Danny Pudi, Ashly Burch, and Imani Hakim, and we will learn more about each of them. That will definitely makes the show's silly moments even funnier and its sad moments even more poignant.
The 2 first episodes I watched are funny and well written. Which gives me a lot for the rest of the season. I don’t even play video games, and I really like the show. If you’re a fan of workplace comedies like THE OFFICE and SILICON VALLEY you will enjoy MYTHIC QUEST as well.
MYTHIC QUEST premiered two episodes today, May 7th. And additional episodes will be released weekly on the Apple TV+ streaming service.
THE SONS OF SAM: A DESCENT INTO DARKNESS
Netflix dropped its four-part limited series SONS OF SAM: A DESCENT INTO DARKNESS on Wednesday. I like most of these Netflix crime docs. Apart from THE VANISHING AT THE CECIL HOTEL, which was awful, they are a very entertaining watch.
This one is about the Son of Sam killings in New York City in the late 1970s. Which left the whole city in fear and chaos for over a year. But the police eventually caught David Berkowitz and charged him for the string of murders.
The documentary follows the late investigative journalist Maury Terry and his obsession to prove to the world that the murders were actually committed by a satanic cult. The show is well crafted as it connects us visually with Terry's writings and findings. Filmmaker Joshua Zeman expertly blends archival news clips and damning dialogue fragments. Paul Giamatti reads Terry's own language and case files with care.
The Sons of Sam is definitely a story about Berkowitz. But it could be argued that this is just as much Maury Terry’s story. The obsession of the investigative journalist down the infinite rabbit hole of satanic worshiping and some other crazy conspiracies is an important part of the doc. And his decline into this two-decade-long obsession with the Berkowitz case is ultimately linked to his death in 2015.
I thought the whole thing was fascinating. I’ve had heard about the summer of sam murders but never once read about Sam’s sons. And even though I’m not totally buying Into Terry’s theories, I enjoyed the historical recap and found some of the conspiracy theories to be hilarious.
THE SONS OF SAM: A DESCENT INTO DARKNESS is available now on Netflix.
