Hello, everyone! it is Friday again and Gilby is here to give you all some Pop Culture recommendations for your weekend. In this week’s newsletter, I share my thoughts on the Amazon Prime Video new series called DAISY JONES & THE SIX. Which has great production values but a very generic plot. Also, for me, the only two great things that came out from the 70s were (and I’m willing to die on this hill lol) Punk Rock and HipHop, and this show is not about any of these things. I talk about two new movies too. The run-of-the-mill action flick OPERATION FORTUNE and the very entertaining CREED III. And as always there is a playlist with five songs I enjoyed during the week.
QUICK THOUGHTS
DAISY JONES & THE SIX is a visually stunning series that takes viewers on a journey back to the 1970s. Based on the novel of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reid, the show follows the fictional rock band, Daisy Jones & The Six, and the complex relationships and struggles they face as they become one of the biggest bands in the world. The series boasts a talented cast, including Riley Keough as the enigmatic Daisy Jones, and a soundtrack that perfectly captures the essence of the era. The costumes and set design are equally impressive, transporting viewers back to the gritty and glamorous world of rock and roll. Overall, DAISY JONES & THE SIX is a must-watch for 1970s music enthusiasts. While it may not be groundbreaking, it is a solid entry in the genre and has well-executed visuals.
OPERATION FORTUNE the latest action-comedy from director Guy Ritchie is a mixed bag that fails to fully deliver on its potential. While the film features a star-studded cast and some impressive action sequences, it ultimately falls short due to a convoluted plot and lack of character development. Jason Statham delivers his usual tough-guy performance, but the other characters are underutilized and fail to leave a lasting impression. The humor, while occasionally funny, often feels forced and misses the mark. The plot is overly complicated and difficult to follow, with too many subplots and twists that detract from the overall enjoyment of the film. While the action sequences are visually impressive, they lack any real sense of tension or danger. In my opinion, OPERATION FORTUNE is a forgettable addition to the action-comedy genre, failing to live up to the standards set by previous films in the genre. While it may appeal to die-hard fans of Statham or Ritchie, it is unlikely to leave a lasting impression on most viewers.
CREED III, the latest installment of the ROCKY franchise, is a thrilling sports drama that is sure to delight fans of the series. Directed by Michael B. Jordan, who also stars in the film as Adonis Creed, the movie follows the young boxer as he navigates the challenges of fame, family, and legacy in the ring. Jordan delivers a powerful performance as Creed, capturing the intensity and passion of the character with skill and nuance. The supporting cast is equally impressive, with Tessa Thompson reprising her role as Creed's love interest, Bianca, and Jonathan Majors really killing it as Damian Anderson. The film is visually stunning, with breathtaking fight scenes that are expertly choreographed and shot. The soundtrack, featuring a mix of classic and modern hip-hop, adds to the energy and excitement of the film. While the plot may be somewhat predictable, CREED III is a well-crafted and emotionally resonant film that explores themes of family, loyalty, and sacrifice. Fans of the ROCKY franchise will not be disappointed, and newcomers to the series will find much to enjoy in this thrilling and engaging movie.
